URS (Ureteroscopy) with laser lithotripsy is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure used to treat stones lodged in the ureter or kidney. It involves passing a thin endoscopic instrument through the natural urinary passage—without any cuts—to locate and break the stone using a medical laser.
Under the expertise of Dr. Ajinkya Kasekar, URS with laser removal offers quick pain relief, excellent stone clearance, and a fast, comfortable recovery.
Ureteroscopy is a procedure where a small telescope-like instrument called a ureteroscope is passed through the urethra → bladder → ureter.
It allows the surgeon to directly visualize the stone in the ureter or kidney.
A Holmium:YAG or Thulium fiber laser is then used to break the stone into tiny pieces or fine dust for safe removal.
URS is recommended when:
The stone is 6 mm or larger
Pain is severe or persistent
Medical therapy fails to pass the stone
The stone is stuck in the ureter
The stone causes infection or urine blockage
Stones are located in the lower, middle, or upper ureter
There is recurring ureteric colic
It is also suitable for patients who are not fit for ESWL or open surgery.
A ureteroscope is passed through the natural urinary pathway.
The stone is identified using high-definition imaging.
A laser fiber is used to fragment the stone into dust or small pieces.
The fragments are either removed using baskets or passed naturally.
A temporary DJ stent may be placed to ensure smooth urine flow during healing.
The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes.
No external incision is required.
No cuts, no stitches
Immediate relief from obstruction
Suitable for all ureteric stones
Safe for hard stones (calcium oxalate, cystine, etc.)
Day-care or short-stay procedure
Very high stone-clearance rate
Minimal post-procedure discomfort
Most patients:
Are discharged the same day
Resume normal activities in 1–2 days
Experience mild burning or frequency temporarily
Have a follow-up for DJ stent removal after 1–3 weeks
A stent may be placed if:
The stone was impacted
There is swelling in the ureter
Fragment clearance is required
Laser dusting generated fine particles
The patient has infection or severe pain
Stent removal is quick and done through a simple outpatient procedure.
Mild burning or frequency
Temporary blood in urine
Stent-related discomfort
Serious complications are extremely rare under expert care.
Expertise in advanced laser stone surgery
High success rates for all ureteric stone locations
Modern ureteroscopes and laser systems
Minimal pain, fast recovery
