TURP / TUIP

TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) and TUIP (Transurethral Incision of the Prostate) are minimally invasive endoscopic procedures used to treat enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia – BPH) in men. These procedures help relieve urinary blockage, improve urine flow, and significantly improve quality of life.

Under the expertise of Dr. Ajinkya Kasekar, TURP and TUIP are performed using advanced instruments to ensure safe, effective, and long-lasting relief from prostate symptoms.

What Is TURP?

TURP is the gold standard treatment for moderate to severe prostate enlargement.
During the procedure, a special endoscopic instrument is inserted through the urethra (natural urinary passage), and the excess prostate tissue causing blockage is removed.

This opens up the urinary channel and restores normal urine flow.

What Is TUIP?

TUIP is a less invasive alternative to TURP.
Instead of removing prostate tissue, Dr. Ajinkya Kasekar makes a small incision in the prostate to widen the urinary passage.

It is ideal for:

  • Small to moderately enlarged prostates

  • Patients who require minimal intervention

  • Men with bladder neck obstruction

Who Needs TURP / TUIP?

These procedures are recommended for men experiencing:

  • Difficulty passing urine

  • Weak urine flow

  • Frequent night-time urination

  • Urgency or dribbling

  • Recurrent urinary infections

  • Incomplete bladder emptying

  • Urinary retention

  • Bladder stones due to BPH

  • Failure of medications

TURP is usually preferred for larger prostates, while TUIP is best for smaller glands or select cases.

How TURP / TUIP Are Performed

Both procedures are done endoscopically, with:

  • No external cuts

  • Minimal bleeding

  • Short hospital stay

TURP Procedure:

  1. A resectoscope is passed through the urethra.

  2. Excess prostate tissue is shaved off using electric/laser energy.

  3. The urinary passage is widened.

  4. A catheter is kept temporarily for drainage.

TUIP Procedure:

  1. A small incision is made at the bladder neck/prostate.

  2. This relaxes pressure and improves urine flow.

  3. Using the same endoscopic approach with no incisions on the skin.

Average procedure time: 45–90 minutes.

Benefits of TURP / TUIP

  • Highly effective and long-lasting

  • No external scars

  • Immediate improvement in urine flow

  • Relief from symptoms within days

  • Short recovery time

  • Gold-standard for BPH treatment

  • Suitable for elderly and high-risk patients

Recovery After Prostate Surgery

Most patients:

  • Stay in the hospital for 1–2 days

  • Have a catheter for 1–3 days

  • Resume normal activities within 1 week

  • Notice significant urinary improvement within 1–2 weeks

Mild burning or increased frequency may occur temporarily and is normal.

Risks (Rare & Well-Controlled)

  • Mild bleeding

  • Temporary burning or urgency

  • Retrograde ejaculation (common but harmless)

  • Temporary urinary discomfort

With expert hands, major complications are extremely uncommon.
